5 Screen Free Activities My Kids Are Obsessed With

Screens are part of modern life, and honestly, I'm not here to pretend my kids never watch them.

But I've noticed something really beautiful happens when we intentionally swap screen time for simple play. They become more creative, more curious, and somehow even more connected to the world around them.

The best part is that these activities don't require expensive toys or hours of planning. Most of them happen naturally, and they're the ones my kids ask for again and again.

Here are our current favorites.

1. Go on a Color Walk

This has become one of our favorite ways to make an ordinary walk feel exciting.

Instead of simply heading outside, we'll pick a color or a few nature "treasures" to spot on our walk. Maybe we're looking for something green, something tiny, something soft, or something round.

It turns a regular walk into a little adventure, and it's amazing how quickly kids start noticing the little details that adults usually walk right past.

2. Water Play

There is something magical about water.

Sprinklers, the pool, the hose, the beach... basically anything that feels like summer in the '90s.

The kids never seem to get tired of it, and neither do I. Hours can disappear while they're running, splashing, creating games, and using their imaginations.

Sometimes the simplest activities really are the best ones.

3. Audio Players

One of the best investments we've made has been our Yoto audio player.

It gives them something engaging to listen to without needing a screen.

Whether it's stories, music, or educational content, they get completely immersed while still playing, drawing, building, or simply relaxing.

It's become a wonderful alternative for quiet time, long car rides, or those moments when they want entertainment without reaching for a tablet.

4. Have Them Explore Hobbies

One thing I've learned is that kids naturally gravitate toward different interests if we give them the opportunity.

Lean into something that interests your kids.

For Gio, it's been piano.

For both kids, Pokémon cards have become a whole thing.

Their hobbies don't have to be perfect or productive. The goal is simply to let them discover what lights them up and encourage them to keep exploring.

5. All the Crafts

If their hands are busy, they're usually happy.

My kids have been into bracelet making, origami, scratch off paper, and coloring.

Truly anything that lets their hands get busy.

Not every craft ends up hanging on the fridge, and that's completely okay. The joy comes from creating, experimenting, and having the freedom to make something all their own.

It Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

One thing I've realized as a parent is that kids rarely ask for elaborate entertainment.

They want opportunities to play, explore, create, and spend time together.

Some of our best memories have come from a walk around the neighborhood, an afternoon with the sprinkler running, or sitting around the table making bracelets and coloring together.

If you're hoping to cut back on screen time, don't put pressure on yourself to change everything overnight.

Try one activity this week.

You may be surprised by how quickly your kids discover that boredom often leads to the best adventures.
