There is nothing worse than waking up with that familiar scratchy throat, stuffy nose, or heavy feeling that tells you a cold might be on its way.
While there is no magic cure for the common cold, I've learned that giving my body extra support early on often helps me feel better sooner and recover more comfortably.
As always, these are the simple things I personally reach for. They're all about supporting your immune system and giving your body what it needs to do what it does best.
Here are my five non negotiables when I feel a cold coming on.
1. Hydrate More Than You Think You Need To
When your immune system is working hard, staying hydrated becomes even more important.
I keep water nearby all day and often add herbal teas, warm lemon water, or an electrolyte drink if I'm feeling especially run down.
Hydration helps support your body's natural recovery process and can also soothe a sore throat and help loosen congestion.
2. Load Up on Vitamin C Rich Foods
When I'm not feeling my best, I naturally reach for colorful fruits and vegetables.
My favorite thing to do when I am feeling sick…load up on oranges. I mean TONS of oranges. I have a theory that eating a crazy amount of oranges while you are sick helps you get better quickly.
Oranges, kiwi, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and citrus fruits all provide vitamin C while also adding plenty of fluids and antioxidants to your day.
I try to eat a variety of whole plant foods that nourish my body from the inside out.
3. Prioritize Rest
This is probably the hardest one for many of us.
When life is busy, it's tempting to keep pushing through.
But I've learned that slowing down early often saves me from feeling even worse later.
That might mean going to bed earlier, canceling plans, taking a nap, or simply giving myself permission to have a quieter day.
Rest is productive when your body is healing.
4. Nourish Yourself With Simple Foods
When I feel a cold coming on, I keep meals simple and easy to digest.
Warm soups, smoothies, fresh fruit, steamed vegetables, oatmeal, and nourishing plant-based meals usually sound the most appealing.
The goal isn't to eat perfectly.
It's simply to give your body steady nourishment while it focuses on recovery.
5. Support Your Daily Routine
When I'm under the weather, I try to stay consistent with the healthy habits that support me year round.
That includes taking my regular supplements, drinking plenty of fluids, getting fresh air if I feel up to it, and avoiding the temptation to burn the candle at both ends.
Our immune system benefits most from consistency, not last-minute panic.
A Gentle Reminder
Getting sick is part of being human.
Sometimes, despite eating well, exercising, and taking great care of ourselves, we still catch a cold.
That doesn't mean you've done anything wrong.
Instead of fighting your body, try supporting it.
Give yourself permission to slow down.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat nourishing foods.
Rest without guilt.
Your body is working incredibly hard to take care of you, and sometimes the kindest thing we can do is return the favor.
If your symptoms become severe, last longer than expected, or you're concerned about your health, it's always a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider.

My Cold Season Essentials
These are a few things I always like to keep stocked at home.
An easy way to support your daily immune health alongside a balanced diet.
Perfect for staying hydrated when you're feeling run down.
A staple I like to have on hand during cold and flu season.
This is one my husband believes in big time. Not too long ago, I thought I may have had strep throat (I probably did) I decided to give an entire clove, RAW, down the hatchet and believe it or not, within a day I felt much better!
