Heading back on set always feels a little like returning to another world: one filled with early call times, bright lights, endless makeup touch-ups, and the kind of hours that can test even the best skincare routine.
As much as I love the creative energy of being on set, my skin and body definitely notice the change. Dry air, heavy makeup, lack of sleep, and constant retouching can leave you feeling less than radiant by wrap time. So over the years, I’ve learned to come prepared - not just with snacks and scripts, but with my own little beauty survival kit.
It’s my way of keeping a sense of normalcy (and glow) through the chaos: simple, natural essentials that help me feel grounded, hydrated, and like me.
1. Hydration Heroes
The first rule of beauty on set? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I mentioned this in last week’s blog, which focuses on wellness habits I am practicing while being on set. Always keep a large water bottle on hand, preferably stainless-steel, and refill it constantly. For a little boost, add electrolytes or chlorophyll drops to support energy and skin health.
Hydrating mist can keep your skin moisturized and refreshed; something with rosewater or aloe for between takes. A quick spritz revives tired skin and helps makeup settle naturally instead of caking or cracking throughout the day.
2. A Good Clean Base
No matter how much makeup I wear, my skin’s health underneath it matters most. I start every morning with a gentle cleanser and a light, nourishing moisturizer - nothing too heavy that might interfere with makeup, but rich enough to lock in moisture.
My go-tos are clean, plant-based formulas that calm the skin and protect the barrier. (If you’ve ever had foundation sitting on dry patches under bright lights, you know why this matters!)
At the end of the day, I double cleanse religiously - micellar water or cleansing balm first, then a gentle face wash. Removing every trace of makeup is non-negotiable.
3. Lip + Hand Essentials
Between takes, I’m constantly talking, sipping coffee, or touching up, so my lips and hands take a beating. I always carry a rich natural lip balm (I love anything with shea butter or coconut oil) and a light hand cream that absorbs quickly but keeps me soft through all the sanitizing and set life.
Bonus tip: I sometimes dab lip balm onto cheekbones for a quick, dewy touch-up if my makeup’s looking flat under lights.
4. Skin-Nourishing Snacks
It might not be a “beauty product,” but what I eat on set affects my skin more than anything else. I pack easy, hydrating snacks - cucumber slices, apple with almond butter, trail mix, and my go-to: homemade energy balls with oats, flaxseed, and dates.
These keep my energy (and blood sugar) steady, and they help me avoid the processed snacks that can lead to inflammation or breakouts when I’m already tired and stressed.
5. My Glow Reboot Ritual
There’s a moment mid-day, around hour six or seven, when everyone starts to fade - the lights feel hotter, the air feels drier, and your reflection looks... well, tired.
That’s when I take two minutes for a “glow reboot.” I’ll spritz my face with mist, dab on some balm under my eyes and over my cheekbones, drink a big gulp of water, and take three deep breaths. It’s a mini reset that helps me feel human again; inside and out.
It’s about energy: taking care of my skin is also how I take care of my mindset.
The best “beauty survival kit” isn’t about having every product, it’s about finding the few that make you feel like yourself, even in the most demanding environments. For me, it’s hydration, clean skin, small rituals, and nourishing snacks. Things that bring me back to balance when the day gets long and the mirror gets a little less kind.
Beauty isn’t about perfection - it’s about presence. And when I feel centered, calm, and cared for, that’s when I look my best, too.
