5 Non-Negotiables When I Travel

July 8, 2026

I genuinely love to travel, but I'll be honest, it can throw my healthy routine completely off if I'm not intentional.

Long flights, unfamiliar grocery stores, eating every meal out, and sitting for hours at a time can leave me feeling sluggish before the trip has even really started.

Over the years I've figured out a few simple habits that help me feel like myself wherever I go. They are not about perfection or restriction. They are simply the things that make traveling feel easier on my body, give me more energy, and help me enjoy the experience even more.

Here are my five non-negotiables every time I pack my suitcase.

1. I Always Move Before a Flight

I joke that I'm basically a kid because I need to get the wiggles out before I sit still for hours.

Whether it's a strength workout, a long walk, or even twenty minutes of movement at home, I always try to get my body moving before heading to the airport.

It helps me feel more energized, improves circulation, and makes those long hours in a plane seat much more comfortable.

Travel days involve plenty of sitting, so starting the day with movement helps create a little balance.

2. I Pack My Own Food

People always laugh when they see what I'm carrying through the airport.

Even if I'm flying first class, chances are there's still a jar of homemade salad packed in my bag, along with nuts, fresh fruit, or other snacks I know I'll actually enjoy. I always carry Mid-day squares with me.

It's not because airport food is off limits.

It's because I know I feel my best when I have nourishing options that leave me feeling satisfied instead of sluggish.

Having familiar foods with me also takes away the stress of wondering what I'll be able to find later.

3. I Always Buy Glass Bottled Spring Water

Hydration is one of the first things I think about when I travel.

I've heard people say you can sometimes bring spring water through security if it's for health reasons, but I've never tested that myself.

Instead, I usually head straight to the airport kiosks that carry glass-bottled spring water, like Evian, and stock up before my flight.

It might seem like a small thing, but staying hydrated makes such a difference in how I feel after traveling.

4. I Order Groceries Before I Arrive

This might be my favorite travel hack.

As soon as I book my accommodation, I save the hotel or Airbnb address into Instacart and start looking for the highest quality grocery stores nearby.

Then I schedule a delivery for shortly after I arrive.

Opening the fridge and seeing fresh fruit, vegetables, plant-based staples, and everything else I normally eat instantly makes a new place feel like home.

It also means I'm not relying on restaurants for every single meal.

5. I Never Leave Home Without My Staples

There are a few things that always make it into my suitcase, no matter where I'm going.

And yes... sometimes even a small cooking pan or two.

It might sound excessive, but having my daily essentials with me helps me stick to the routines that make me feel my best.

Travel is meant to be enjoyed, and I know I enjoy it so much more when I feel good.

Travel Doesn't Have to Mean Leaving Your Habits Behind

One thing I've learned over the years is that healthy routines don't have to disappear just because you're away from home.

In fact, keeping a few familiar habits often helps make travel feel less stressful and much more enjoyable.

You don't need to copy everything I do.

Maybe your non-negotiables are a morning walk, a favorite tea, a good book, or stretching before bed.

The goal isn't perfection.

It's creating a few simple rituals that help you feel grounded wherever life takes you.

Travel should leave you with incredible memories, not the feeling that you need another vacation just to recover.
